What is the state of childrens' teeth today?
This week in class we will be discussing "looking after our teeth". Every time we do this discussion in class all children tell us that they brush their teeth morning and night and most will have visited a dentist by the time they are 4. They are all told by their parents and dentist that if they don't brush their teeth they will go black or fall out. So if they all know this, why according to the World Health Organisation, do almost half of all Irish 12 year olds and three quarters of all 15 year olds have some form of decay in their permanent teeth?
One of the problems, the amount of sugar we consume. According to the Department of Health, 37% of Irish children consume sweets once a day and 21% drink soft drinks daily. For several years, in Stretch-n-Grow class, we have show children the number of teaspoons of sugar there are in an average can of soft drink. They know not to consume that amount of sugar, often responding with Yuk! But still we buy them for children. On leaving a Stretch-n-Grow class last week, I saw one of the little boys, who had just been collected, outside. As he was walking away from the school his Mum handed him a bar of chocolate and a soft drink. Parents please consider your choices for your child.
