Movement - It's Brain Training - just not as we know it.
"Physical movement, from earliest infancy and throughout our lives, plays an important role in the creation of nerve cell networks - which are the essence of learning" Carla Hannaford PhD
All the traffic on the internet and all the phone calls in the world is nothing compared to the amount of information traffic in the brain and body. Because it goes on without conscious attention, operating on a miraculous autopilot, we never give it a moment's thought.
We are physical beings in a physical world. We may not all like movement and physical activity, but from the perspective of Darwin, we are all designed as athletes. Many people prefer to be artists, teachers or scientists. They may prefer to talk with friends, read to go to the theatre. Some hated PE with passion in school, others loved it and it brings them joy, much to the bewilderment of others.
There is only one way to engage the physical brain and that is through movement. Movement is the brain's language, how it understands. We have "to do". Physical exercise and involvement in life trigger great waves of messages throughout the mind and body. If we want "thinkers" we must also be "doers".
Unfortunately, children's poor physical development is, more and more, becoming a significant barrier to learning and appropriate behaviour. It is hoped that one day every child will have the chance to fulfil their potential because everyone surrounding them will understand and appreciate the impact that all early experiences have on the developing brain.
Old saying - "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"!
